For all those who are interested in learning the technique of fortune-telling using the old Bosnian cards, the so-called faletarke, the basic rule to keep in mind is that the first card in the deck is the one called Zvijezda/The Star (number 1), while the last card is Božja ruka/The Hand of God (number 41). Why this is important, I will explain in another text.
This time I will focus on the cards that speak about love, the meaning of certain cards in that area, and the combinations they can create.
As is well known, the cards are interpreted both individually and in combination with the card “they touch” on the left or right side; sometimes the card above or below is also analyzed, depending on what its position suggests.
One of the best signs of destiny — which I would actually call a divine truth — is when, in the classical layout of three rows of four cards (from left to right), the first card that appears is Zvijezda/The Star. In that position, this card represents a sign of true happiness; its symbolism is deep and very emotional, suggesting that both partners feel the same sentiments. Namely, in this position it speaks of a karmic relationship (a bond that sooner or later had to happen), sincere love, desire, and passion. Here emotions are clearly expressed, and the relationship between the two people is based more on feelings than on physical or sexual attraction — though passion is not lacking either.
Rijeka/The River is the card that shows how everything is transient: nothing stays the same forever, everything changes — sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. The client cannot rely on the present situation, feeling, or person. When it appears next to the Ljubav/Love card, it signals the transience of someone’s affection or the cooling of a relationship, and often points to a fleeting flirtation.
Vatra/Fire – Rijeka/River: the combination of these two cards literally says: love is dying out. It can also indicate a change of opinion or attitude.
The card called Duh/The Spirit is, in every sense, an “empty” card, and as such always emphasizes that something is missing — for example, love or contact in a relationship. Literally speaking: nothing is happening, for a shorter or longer period. It often shows that love or infatuation exists only in the client’s thoughts — a platonic love.
Among the favorable card combinations is when Vatra/Fire – Krevet/Bed appear side by side: sex, intimate relationship, strong libido.
Krevet/Bed – Ljubav/Love: sex.
Ljubav/Love – Mjesec/Moon, side by side, reveal romantic love, tender feelings, sadness due to separation from a loved one, and daydreaming.
Briga/Worry – Vaga/Scales predict a breakup, temporary or final, depending on the surrounding cards. Another unfavorable card for love or marriage is Raskršće/The Crossroads. It often represents separation, breakup, or a third person — in other words, infidelity.
Cards that represent love happiness:
Mladić/Young Man – Ljubav/Love: a man in love.
Djevojka/Young Woman – Ljubav/Love: a woman in love.
Kilit/Padlock – Ljubav/Love: someone is in love with you.
Dijete/Child – Ljubav/Love: new love, new relationship, new marriage.
Nafaka/Fortune – Ljubav/Love: marriage.
